So a few weeks ago I attended the last ever Secret Garden Party as we know it. There are rumours it will be replaced but of course there’s the worry it will never be the same as SGP! I’m feeling pretty sad about this so I wanted to do a little post about my time being a gardener (that’s what they call SGP festival goers!).
I went to my first ever Secret Garden Party in 2009, I was lucky enough to do some artwork there and got a free ticket in exchange — a win-win situation! I didn’t really know what to expect but it was so so fun. From that weekend on I knew I’d be attending many more in the future. I discovered it was truly not a party to be missed!
I’ve kept going back over the past nine years and I think I’ve only missed one or at most two since then! I’ve had some great years in the Garden as you can probably tell! I always think it’s amazing how everyone going to SGP will come away with a different story to tell. We all experience this party differently, and in some cases it’s just being at the right place at the right time, like in 2009 when I way lucky to catch The Kooks when they played a secret gig!!
I’ve seen so many amazing artists in the Garden from John Newman, Izzy Bizzu, The Kooks, Ward Thomas, Bastille, Kate Nash – I could go on! Such amazing memories. A few years ago I even stood next to the REAL Prince Harry. And before you say it, yes it was the real one not one of the look-a-likes they hired that year. I was right near him and he was with all his Eton friends! I’ve also got photo evidence but I wouldn’t want to post it for privacy reasons.
This year will always be a special year as it was the last. The weather wasn’t as great as others have been and the rain always makes things more uncomfortable, but none of that really matters because when you walk into the Garden all your worries fade away.
Over the years I’ve enjoyed the festival with lots of different friendship groups. One year I went just with my mum and it was great, she’d always wanted to go to a festival and actually that was my most organised year. Top tip: if you don’t want to forget anything, take your mum! She’ll think of and pack everything you could possibly need, and even better, she put up the tent! Bonus!
The past 3 years I’ve been with Michael, and this year we also spent it with Sian and some of her friends which was so much fun. We all got on great and partied until 3AM to cheesy music. Highlight of my night!
My summers won’t be the same without four crazy days of the Secret Garden Party, but all my memories will live with me forever.
I hope you enjoyed hearing about my years in the Garden. Let me know if you’ve have ever been to SGP or any other festivals — I’d love to hear some of your stories!
