Blogging is a funny old industry. One thing I love is that it’s so unpredictable — you never know what’s going to pop up in your inbox. One day I had an email asking me to review £2.99 bacon. The next day an invitation email came through from Tesla… yes, Tesla! Since starting my blog I’ve had so many great experiences, and I was excited to add this one to the list.
I’d never heard of a Tesla until about 4 years ago when I met Michael, and a week never goes by where he doesn’t at least mention them once! I thought he was just some weird car freak until I learnt a bit more about them when the Cambridge store opened in the Grand Arcade (they also have one in Milton Keynes which isn’t too far away). He obviously dragged me in, and when I got a chance to sit in one and find out a bit more about them I was like, hmmmm, now I know why they’re so dreamy!!
So when the invitation from Tesla came through for me to drive one for the day I certainly wasn’t going to say no! Although I will admit I was pretty scared to be trusted to drive this amazing car, I hadn’t ever driven an automatic let alone an electric car before!
We headed down to Heathrow early on Tuesday morning to pick up the car, and I was shown around the store where they had a Model S and Model X on show. They showed me around, introduced me to electric car ownership and told me more about living with a Tesla. They can also chat to you about your commuting style and recommend the best options that would be just right for you. It was all super relaxed!
Then we walked over to the car and I was shown all the cool gadgets it had, like the huge full screen where you control everything, and even get software updates! Yep, software updates to the car! No more waiting years to upgrade your car, with Tesla they just send you software updates and new features just like your iPhone does. One great thing is that they’re always listening to customer feedback and add features “over the air” all the time.
After having a little tour of the car we were off! We headed to the stunning Oakley Court for some lunch where we could try out the Tesla destination charger. Destination chargers are popping up all over the place at destinations you may stay for a few hours or even overnight (restaurants, hotels, etc).
If you’re going on a trip somewhere, no matter how far away, it’s super easy to plan. You enter your destination into the huge screen (they use Google Maps, so cool!) and it knows how much charge you have and where (if anywhere) you need to stop for a charge, just like you’d need to refuel.
One example we tried was driving from London to Edinburgh. The map said the journey would be 7 hours, with a 40 minute stop at a supercharger. That’s pretty amazing! If you were driving for 7 hours even with a petrol car you’d want to stop half way for at least 40 minutes. The map even shows you all the charging points on the map and how many are in use/free at any point in time.
One thing that was really interesting to learn was how people see electric car charging as being inconvenient, however you just get home and plug it in and it’s ready to go the next day. It’s no different to charging your phone really. The inconvenience is actually having to go out of your way to a fuel station every week or so to fuel up! With the growing number of destination chargers it also makes longer distance trips more exciting as you can stop off at new locations you wouldn’t have stopped at before, where you can have a rest and a drink before jumping back on your journey.
Having a drive in a Tesla has made me see the future of cars, and I’m super excited! All new Tesla’s have the technology to completely drive themselves, so when the laws allow self-driving cars in the UK it’s going to be a game changer!
Tesla has stores dotted around the country, and I’m going to say stores instead of car showrooms because they don’t feel like a typical car showrooms at all. The team don’t jump on you trying to sell sell sell, they’re much more relaxed and they’re there to tell you about living with an electric car, the benefits it has and how easily it can actually be integrated into your lifestyle. In my neck of the woods the best stores to go and check out are the Cambridge, Milton Keynes or London stores. Make sure to head in to take a look, they’re completely different to any car you will have sat in before, and they’re definitely the future!
I was pretty excited about my day with a Tesla that I vlogged it over on my YouTube channel, make sure to check it out!
Disclaimer: Tesla gave me a complimentary car for the day to review on my blog. I also vlogged it purely as I was so excited and wanted to record and share my day over on my YouTube channel, I knew this was definitely not an experience to miss. All views are my own honest opinions! See my disclaimer for more information.
