My 2017 Edit

I’m back writing today’s post after plenty of turkey, way too much chocolate and a mega food baby — I’m sure I’m not the only one! I hope you all had a great Christmas!

So now we’re closing 2017 and heading into the New Year! I always feel like we’re closing a book and opening a new one with a bit of excitement and a bit of nerves! I guess you never really know a book until you start reading it as you can’t judge it by its cover… and I guess you can’t judge 2018 by 2017! I’m not going to complain if 2018 is like 2017, it would be a great year, but no two years are ever the same, are they!?

I don’t know why I always feel a bit lost and scared starting a New Year. I think it’s mainly the anxiety of what is to come, which is totally silly as it’s just a number and really it’s just another day! What’s the difference when one day it was 2017 and the next 2018.

I didn’t want to go into the New Year without reflecting on my little space on the internet and looking back on what I’ve accomplished this year.

I started the year in a new job, which turned out wasn’t the right move for me, and meant I could make the move onto making Sophie Kate my full-time career, something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I guess the move to the wrong job just made me realise how much I needed a big change in my life, and that was this!

In January 2017 I completed my first bit of paid work, then in July I had my first ever Instagram AD go live! Since then I’ve posted so many more ads on Instagram and written a few sponsored posts!

I also tried something different and very scary… I gave two presentations this year! One to a small travel company all about social media and making content, and the other was to year 10 students on a careers day at a school that once rejected my sixth form application as they didn’t think I was clever enough. As you can probably guess, one of the most popular answers to “what do you want to be when you’re older?” nowadays is to become a blogger and YouTuber… so I was literally petrified on the day, but I did it! I spoke to them all about what I do and how I still find it hard to believe I do this for my job! The year 10’s were great, they found it so interesting and they were really shocked at how much work there is behind the scenes (paperwork, emails, accounts, networking, photography, editing and writing). I hope I encouraged them but also helped them understand how much goes into it and that it really does take time to grow.

A massive highlight was when Michael and I got to drive our DREAM car for the day… looking back now it’s pretty emotional and I wish I would have told myself back then to enjoy it more and not be so anxious and scared that I might crash a £100k+ car!

I attended many PR days and events during 2017 and had to face some anxiety with them, however I also attended so many without any anxiety at all, so we might be getting somewhere with kicking my anxiety’s butt! Well, let’s hope so, it’s always going to be something you can’t just switch off but at least I’m coping better and saying yes to a lot more things than I would have done before.

I also worked on 4 different published articles (you can find them here). Two of them are in The Grafton Press which is by a Cambridge shopping centre and the other one was for the Grand Arcade Gift Guide which is the other Cambridge shopping centre. It’s been really great to be involved in both. The last one was for Blogosphere magazine which was an article I wrote in the events section. Pretty mad considering at school I was always in the bottom set and all the teachers thought I was the dumb one because I was dyslexic. Never let anyone tell you that you’re not clever or good enough to do anything… if you dream big you can make it happen!

I’m excited to see what kind of year 2018 will be. Crazily I’m up for an award in not just one category but two! Fingers crossed!!! I really want to focus more on improving my videos on YouTube and planning the main ones in advance and working with Sian a lot more on the videography. I’m just really looking forward to growing even more, working harder, improving my content and seeing where it all takes me!

I hope this inspires you to take a look back at 2017 and I hope you all have an incredible start to 2018!

Comment with your best moment of 2017 I would love to hear any highlights you had.
