Review & Giveaway: Marco Pierre White Steakhouse, Cambridge

I was super excited when the email popped up in my inbox inviting me to a complimentary meal at the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill at the Cambridge Hilton DoubleTree Hotel. It’s a place I’ve wanted to try out for ages, and I first heard that Marco Pierre White had a restaurant in Cambridge last year when my mum went to a birthday celebration there. As it’s tucked away in the Hilton I always forget about it when choosing where to dine, but now I’ve eaten here I’ll definitely not be forgetting about it!

We parked at the rear of the hotel in the car park (after I accidentally sent Michael down a tiny little road that turned out to be wrong!), and when we walked in we were greeted by a lovely lady who welcomed us and walked us to our table. She pulled out the chairs, kindly took our jackets and left us with the menu (also the wine menu, she must know me well already!).

The restaurant decor was vibrant with green and purple velvet chairs. The tables for two were set-up so you sat next to each other rather than opposite. Sometimes when you’re opposite each other you feel miles apart! Our table overlooked the river however it was dark so we sadly couldn’t see it, but it would be such a lovely view for a lunch or on a light summer’s evening.

After a short wait she came back to take our drinks order, I had a small glass of wine and Michael had a cranberry juice — unfortunately he was the unlucky one who had to drive! The menu had plenty of choice for mains but I knew I was going to have the steak, there was no way I could come to the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse and not try the steak — that would be CRAZY!!

For starter I had a very generous goat’s cheese and beetroot salad and Michael had the French onion soup. My salad was very tasty however I struggled to finish it, and I wanted to make room to steal some of Michael’s soup as it looked so lovely and warming (it was a very cold day).

After our starter we were served a bright pink raspberry sorbet to cleanse our palettes before mains — a nice little surprise that I wasn’t expecting!

For my main course I ordered a fillet steak which I like medium/well and it was cooked perfectly! It was so incredibly tasty and full of vibrant flavours. The presentation was perfect; the delicious triple cooked chips were served in a little copper dish (I LOVEEEEE copper). I ordered garlic butter sauce on the side however it really didn’t need it as the steak was so tasty on it’s own I didn’t want to spoil any flavours.

Michael had a T-bone steak and as he took the first bite his words were “this is the tastiest thing I’ve ever tasted!”, followed by “ohhhhh WOW!”. He then tried some of my fillet and said he thought that tasted as good, if not better! So next time I think he’ll be copying me with the fillet. I think it’s definitely been proven that you can find an incredible steak in Cambridge.

With similar restaurants of this quality you get great tasting food but their portion sizes are sometimes on the small side. Here however, not only is the food incredibly tasty, you also get really good portion sizes. I’ve actually no clue how I managed to fit it in but I somehow did!

I was SO full after the mains but of course I couldn’t resist looking at the desert menu. I ordered the Cambridge burnt cream and it was the best burnt cream I’ve ever had. It had a really different texture to what I’ve tasted before, it was light, fluffy and smooth. It’s hard to explain, but definitely worth giving it a try! Michael of course couldn’t resist the cheesecake. He had already made his decision on the way to the restaurant that if there was cheesecake he would have it. It’s his favourite so he’s so predictable!

I’d highly recommend this restaurant for a special date night, a family meal or any kind of celebration. You won’t regret it.

I’d like to thank Lottie from DoubleTree for inviting me to review the restaurant and for the complimentary meal. It was fantastic and I really enjoyed our evening in the beautiful restaurant. Thank you also to the lovely waitress who looked after us so well and made us feel welcome.
